Sharp Chinchilla Rescue
Our Rescue program is currently on hold pending some structural changes to our house that is affecting the amount of herd space we have. We will however still work with you and help find homes for your chins if you need. Just email us. In extreme or emergency cases, we will do all that we can to accomodate any chin needing a home.
Since we do not have backgrounds on most of our rescued chins, we do not know what silent diseases they may be carrying. Rescued chins are brought to us with no backgrounds. Often these chins are inbreeding. Rescue chins that are healthy are adopted out on a case by case basis. The family who wishes to adopt a rescued chin is required to sign a statement stating that the chin will not be breed, resold for profit or placed within a cage that is also housing a member of the opposite sex. This is done to avoid potential spread of genetic diseases; Since most rescued chins have no verifiable backgrounds, we can not insure they do not have the life threatening disease. Spread of the disease can not only cause birth defects but it can cause death to the unborn/born babies as well as the mother.
I have seen what inbreeding and genetic diseases can do to a chin first hand. I took in 5 chins for a lady who kept them ALL (6 total) within 1 cage. These chins were related (dad, mom, uncle, sister and 2 brothers). The Mom died just before she turned them over to me. The sister happened to be pregnant by another family member. Needless to say, she passed away due to pregnancy complications. This consequently took her life and the life of her unborn babies. This is not an experience that I wish anyone to have to go through, nor do I want to experience it again.
If you find that you are no longer able to provide care for your chin(s), please do not take them to a shelter or simply set them free. We will be happy to provide a loving home and care for them. Since we do this as a courtesy to the chin, we will not charge you a rescue fee nor will we pay an adoption fee.
